October 17th - 19th Stand Up Take Action for the Millennium Development Goals

Join millions worldwide as they Stand Up and Take Action Against Poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on 17 – 19 October 2008.

Last year over 43 million voices were heard all over the world. This year, help us break that record and send an even louder message to keep the promise to end poverty and achieve the MDGs by 2015.

HOW TO “STAND UP AND TAKE ACTION”?

The Stand Up Take Action campaign which will be held for 3 days from 17 – 19 October 2008 coincides with the global mobilization around the National Week for Overcoming Poverty, the International Day of Poverty Eradication and the White Band Day of the Global Call of Action Against Poverty.

Building on the gains from last year’s Stand Up Speak Out campaign, the United Nations system in the Philippines, in partnership with the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC), working hand-in- hand with MDG partners and advocates, once again joins the global campaign.

Entitled Stand Up and Take Action 2008: Mag-Ina’y Sagipin, Bata’y Pag-aralin”, the campaign will focus on the MDGs least likely to be achieved.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED?

1) ARRANGE YOUR OWN STAND UP EVENT. There are many ways you can take action. Various organizations can organize concrete activities that will demonstrate their contribution to help achieve any of the MDGs. But it would be best if actions could support Goal 2 Education: weekend remedial classes for public elementary school students on Science, Math and English; book donations to far flung rural areas; Reading appreciation classes and distribution of vitamins, etc. and Goal 5 Maternal Health: weekend classes on reproductive health for women; medical missions for underprivileged communities; pre- natal care sessions, etc.

  • Plan the event so the Stand Up Take Action event takes place within the 8 am, 17 October, FRIDAY to 8 pm, October 19, 2008, SUNDAY (Philippine time)

  • Choose the location! It could be a park, a university, at your workplace, at the mall, in a concert, anywhere!

  • The event leader explains Stand Up, the MDGs and the ways people can Take Action

  • Everyone comes together at an event and performs a symbolic action

  • Record this Stand Up Take Acton moment on digital cameras, videos, mobile phones and send to Secretariat.

  • Register your event to the Stand Up Take Action 2008 by calling SUTA Secretariat and/or e-mailing millenniumcampaign.ph@undp.org OR SUTAPH@yahoo.com.

2) JOIN A PLANNED EVENT. The UN family in the Philippines is working with a large number of national and local partners: national government agencies, local government units and associations, civil society and non-governmental groups, business sector, church and faith-based organizations, and many more. To find out more about these events, e-mail Secretariat at millenniumcampaign.ph@undp.org OR SUTAPH@yahoo.com.

HOW TO BE COUNTED AND WHY?

  • All Stand Up Take Action events must be monitored, counted and registered through certified form sheets, and where possible accompanied by attendance sheets.

  • There should be no duplications in the counting process;

  • Where possible, images and video of the action should be captured and sent with submission;

  • Where non-web forms are used, i.e. fax, to submit information, one independent witness should sign and verify the number of event participants;

  • Organizations should make an attendance sheet and fill-out the Tabulation Form (attached) to the SUTA Secretariat in the Philippines who will consolidate the numbers for the country. The forms will be verified to by an accounting firm before submitting them to a Guinness adjudicator at the New York Office of the UN Millennium Campaign who oversees the count worldwide.
