UN rallies 15 Million Filipinos to end poverty, meet the MDGs
Manila, 07 October – In a bid to remind government about its commitment to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the United Nations in the Philippines will mobilize at least 15 million Filipinos from 17-19 October through the Stand Up, Take Action Against Poverty campaign to urge leaders to step up efforts towards alleviating poverty and meeting the MDGs.
The campaign is part of this year’s global mobilization efforts to urge people to stand up and literally take action in addressing poverty and the MDGs.
“This October 17-19, world leaders will hear directly from their people that they will no longer simply watch while 50,000 people die of preventable causes each day,” said Salil Shetty, Director of the Millennium Campaign which is organizing the Stand Up campaign. “World leaders have just recommitted to achieving the MDGs and from this moment on, citizens will be holding them accountable for taking urgent action to deliver on their promises.”
